Jess Gordon is a certified teacher, Empowerment Self-Defense instructor, and the founder of Arise, a self-defense and confidence-building program for children, youth, and adults. With more than 15 years of experience in education, she blends Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, social-emotional learning, and practical safety tools to help people strengthen boundaries, build confidence, and feel grounded and capable in their everyday lives. She holds a Master’s degree in Health, Outdoor, and Physical Education, along with multiple credentials in both teaching and martial arts, including certification as a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Women Empowered instructor.
Jess developed Arise in 2018 and launched it fully in 2020, offering programs that range from preteen empowerment courses and women’s and teen programs to community workshops, corporate training, and educator resources. Her classes center on real-world skills that help students trust their instincts, use their voices, and respond effectively to challenges both physically and emotionally.
Her professional background includes extensive work with local community organizations, schools, and youth-focused groups across Vancouver. Jess has presented at national conferences, including the Canadian Physical and Health Education conference, and is the author of a peer-reviewed article on the benefits of martial-arts-based interventions in school settings.
Through Arise, Jess continues to create accessible, supportive spaces where people can learn to advocate for themselves, stand strong in their bodies, and step confidently into their own power.
