Making History Everyday

ESD Global (ESDG) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to share the methodology of “Self-Defense and Empowerment” as a key strategy for the prevention of violence for both women, children and their affected communities. It is dedicated to making Empowerment Self Defense (ESD) accessible globally through ESD Trainings of Instructors, organizing the annual Violence Prevention Education Conference (VPEC) and supporting research initiatives.

The Begining Of ESD: 2017

The organization was founded in 2017 by Yudit Sidikman, after a consortium of ideas led by 32 ESD experts from seven different countries and four universities, to turn shared ideas, plans and passion into a movement that educates individuals about the nature of violence and provides skills to de-escalate a violent situation of to defend themselves. From there, ESDG was born, capitalizing on more than 50 years of Women Self Defense and ESD development, research and hundreds of years of combined experience and dedication.

2017

ESD Goes International:
2017

The first Train-the-Trainer was held in the USA bringing together 13 women from five countries. The following year, ESD Global conducted two trainings, for 26 instructors from nine countries (seven countries new to ESDG). Additionally, ESDG awarded a grant to an organization in India, to launch ESD programs.

2019

ESDG Trained
85 Women:
2019

In 2019, ESD Global conducted three trainings, one in the USA, one in Greece, training women on the front lines of the migration crisis for leaders within refugee communities, as well as the first in Latin America, conducted in Costa Rica in alliance with the United Nations-Mandated University for Peace. In total, ESDG trained 85 women in 2019. In addition to the training, ESDG provides support in further trainings and a two year mentorship to develop into successful ESD instructors. These women have taught ESD to more than 6,500 women. Also, in 2019 ESDG launched a men's incubator. Thirteen men from nine countries started to develop an ESD program for men.  Building on the work of the men’s group and experience of women-founders trained in previous years, ESDG conducted its first Co-Ed Instructor-for-Instructor Training Program, focused on youth and adolescents.

2020

ESD Hosted Violence Prevention Education:
2020

2020 started ambitiously; ESDG planned 20 instructor programs in 17 countries. However, due to Covid, it was not able to do so. Undeterred by a pandemic, in February 2020, ESDG organized two instructor trainings, and one Master Instructor training, bringing 60 participants from 24 countries, (majority from the continent of Africa). In 2020, ESDG hosted the world's first Violence Prevention Education Convention (VPEC), now held annually.   Currently, ESD, by ESD Global, has been implemented in 51 countries, through its instructor training and mentoring programs and by fostering partnerships.  Seventy-five percent of ESDG graduates are active providing ESD. This demonstrates the need for the tools that ESD Global and ESD provides, as well as its adaptability to different contexts and communities.

2020

Inovating Online Courses: 2020

COVID-19  ESD Global used the COVID pandemic to catalyze innovation by creating a range of self-study and online courses for ESD practitioners to continue to learn and practice ESD.

2020

ESDG Launched
